Research

General Corporate Brand Identities

First I looked into general brand identities to get inspiration for creating an effective and consistent brand identity. I annotated them with my thoughts on them and inspirations I could take through to my designs. From doing this research I found that it is very effective to have one main logo and take elements from that across the brand to keep a consistent identity, and to stick to one key colour scheme and carry it throughout as this allows the designs to be more varied whilst keeping a consistent brand identity because the colour keeps it linked in.

City Brand Identities

I also research brand identities specifically designed for cities to see what has already been done and find the identities that are most effective so I can take inspiration from the best points of each. I really like the idea of having a slogan as this elaborates on an image based logo and captures the spirit of the city through words. I also found that having a simple adaptable logo works better than a complex one that cannot be easily broken apart or developed any further as it allows more diversity within the designs and will give me more freedom.

Moodboards

Next I created some mood boards into some more specific areas for further inspiration.

Typography

I looked into typography and decided to stick with sans serif because I think it will suit the simple elegance of the city of Venice and will work best alongside a logo as it will compliment it and not overpower it. It is also an extremely clear and legible style of typeface so will be perfect for signs and advertisements that need to be read easily from a distance.

Style

I also created a mood board to represent the style of the designs I wanted to go for. From this I found I really like the idea of having a colour overlay over the top of an image because this will help me bring across my colour scheme through not just text but the images on my designs. I also really like the style of the map in the left corner because it is very simple and to the point which would be easy for tourists to understand but also has a quirky style to it with the dashed line fill. I think this simple elegant style of map would really suit Venice as a city.

Style

This style mood board mainly represents a nautical theme and this a route I would like to go down because Venice is all about the water and the canals so I would really like to bring this across in my designs. I also like the simplistic style of the designs as lots of them make use of white space and simple sans serif fonts. I also like the idea of having a small pattern as an accent on my designs such as stripes or chevron.

Colour Scheme

Sticking with the nautical theme, I chose navy, red, turquoise and blue colours for my initial colour scheme ideas because they represent sailor/nautical colours.

I also created mood boards of the city and the culture because I think this will help me when designing as I can try and capture the feel of this in my designs. From this I found that the water is definitely a main feature so I will be sticking to my nautical themed idea, and it is a very classy city full of history and culture and I would like to reflect this by making classy and elegant designs.
