Advertising

Fabric flag signs

I decided to make some advertising signs that would be placed around the city or other cities. These needed to capture the spirit of Venice in a small space and needed to be bold and stand out as people will be looking at them whilst passing by, and won't have a long time to look especially if they are travelling by car.

I tried out various combinations of my logo, slogan, and additional chevron element to find the most effective and clear layout. I went for the dark green for the background as it has a high contrast with the white and will stand out from a distance.

I chose this design because it is clean and doesn't look cluttered, but brings across the nautical feel of the city and the slogan is bold and in a legible typeface that will really stand out from a distance. I made venice a thicker stroke to keep it the main focal point of the text in the design.

Side of shop flag sign

I created a small banner sign for the side of a shop or building, I kept this one very simple and placed my logo over a coloured image background. I think this still bring across the theme of my city and brings across the nautical, elegant, and relaxing atmosphere of Venice without the need for words. The bold contrast in colours will mean it really stands out from a distance.

Bus stop

I designed a sign for a bus stop based around my slogan. I also added my logo in the top corner to keep it linked in to my brand identity. I experimented with a couple of backgrounds to find the most effective that would show the feel of the city and also stand out from a distance.

I chose this design in the end because not only is the contrast between the green and white very strong so it really stands out, but having the image of the city brings across the atmosphere of the city within the design. I have also managed to bring my brand identity across by having a colour from my colour scheme laid over the image.

Brochure

Front Cover

I decided to create a brochure as this is something that most tourists will look at either before or whilst visiting the city so is an integral part of the branding.

I experimented with the layout of the front cover first and tried my logo and slogan out with different image backgrounds. I wanted to use an image background for this because I think it helps capture the city better than anything else.

I chose this design in the end because it gives across a very classy and elegant feel which I think really represents the city. I managed to bring across my brand identity by clearly adding my logo in the corner and using one of my two main fonts for the title.

Map

For the first page I added in my map as this is something all tourists will look for in a guide, especially if they are travelling with it. I experimented with a couple of different arrangements of the title and a small chunk of text. I made the text in one of my two main fonts and a shade from my colour scheme to keep it cohesive with the rest of my designs.

I also added in an oversized page number to add a modern and quirky feel to the brochure. I think this layout is effective as the large amount of white space allows the map to really stand out off the page and be clear and easy to understand.

Travel

I decided to do a page on travel as this is another key thing tourists will need to know when visiting the city. I wanted to keep the pages of the brochure varied to hold the readers interest so I chose a green from my colour scheme as the background, and this worked really well with the white text as there is a bold contrast between the two. I used one of the fonts from my brand identity to keep it cohesive with my other designs. I chose quite a boxed in style that mirrors my website again to keep it coherent with my other designs and I think this also has a clean and elegant look to it which suits the city. I decided to add the chevron detail to the bottom to add a more nautical theme to the page and link to my other designs.

Carnival

Finally I decided to do a spread on one of Venice's biggest events - the carnival.

Again I used the same font and colour scheme as used throughout for continuity. I wanted this to be a text based article style page so I laid it out in a column design. I boxed in part of the text to keep it cohesive with my other two pages but still made the overall layout very different to keep the booklet varied.

I also added in a small title within the image on the right side page as I did on my website which again keeps it cohesive with previous designs.

Layout on mockups

Finally I placed it all on to mockups to get a feel for how it could look if it was produced for print. I think the overall booklet looks really effective because the fonts, colour schemes, and parts of each layout link to my brand identity and previous designs but they also are very varied and don't look like exact copies of what I have done before which keeps my designs diverse and interesting. Although the pages layouts and colours are varied, I think they still look cohesive and flow together as I stuck to the same font and sets of colours throughout along with the same clean and elegant style. I think it is all very clear and legible and will be easy for a tourist to understand, along with capturing the classy style of the city.

Map

Venice Maps Research

First I did some research into maps of venice to give me an idea of the shape and place names of the city. I looked at a variety of styles of map to help me decide the route I wanted to take, but in the end decided to stay with a very simple layout as the illustrated designs are a lot harder to understand which won't be as helpful for tourists, and they wouldn't suit the clean and simple style of the rest of my designs.

Development

First I sketched out the basic shape of the map.

I then created an overlay of lines to fill in the spaces and add a more interesting texture than just a block colour.

I placed the lines inside the outline using a clipping mask.

I changed the colour to a green from my colour scheme as I wanted it to be in keeping with my brand identity. The lines were a little too far apart with made the map have a messy and almost pixelated look to it, so I decided to try again with the lines closer together to get more detail.

Once I had made the lines smaller I also added a small outline to define the edges and get rid of any messy edges.

Finally I added in text for the names of the places. I chose to use one of my two main typefaces for continuity, but did it in black instead of white or green as I have used in my other designs because I wanted it to be really clear and legible.

I then added in my logo and a title which would allow the map to be displayed or made into a poster.

I think my map is effective because it is very clear and legible and would be easy for tourists to understand. The colour scheme and font are in keeping with my brand identity and the simple style fits in with my other designs.

Website

Homepage

I started off with the homepage and experimented with basic layout.

I tried a full image at first but I decided I wanted to add some text and information on the homepage to make it informative so I didn't continue with this.

I also tried images along the bottom but this limited the space above and wouldn't allow for any scrolling down so would limit the size of the site so I didn't stick with this either.

I added in a nav bar using my colour scheme and one of my two main fonts for continuity. I also added the boat and chevron to link with previous designs.

I decided to create a weather forecast as people looking into visiting the city will want to know this before they come, and existing residents will also find it very useful. I chose a very simple icon style design to make it easy to understand and clear and legible.

I then added in the rest of the bulk elements on the page. I decided to box them in to keep in neat and clean and give a more corporate and professional look. I made the text white as it had a strong contrast with the green and made the words really stand out.

I then added in some images along the top to give more of a feel for the city to the site and added in my slogan to reinforce my brand identity. I then added in the rest of the elements to the page e.g. search bar, and darkened the nav bar as the contrast between the white and pale green wasn't strong enough so the text was hard to read and darkening it improved the contrast which increased the legibility.

History

I then created a page for history using the same basic layout but adapting the images and main content. I changed the size of the text boxes to vary it a little but kept the basic layout for continuity.

Tourist Guide

For the tourist guide again I kept the basic layout but edited the images and main content.

Mobile / Tablet View

I also created a mobile and tablet view to make my site accessible to all. For the mobile I had to condense it significantly so I removed the nav bar and made it into a drop down menu at the top instead. To condense the images I created them into a slideshow, and to condense the main content I reduced the size and number of columns, and to get any missing columns the user could just scroll down. I think this is an effective layout because I managed to keep all of my content in.

For the tablet view I managed to keep almost the exact same layout but had to reduce the width so I took the longest column and placed it underneath. This worked out well as the tablet is longer than the laptop screen so it filled in the space at the bottom.

Layout on mock ups

I then laid everything out on to the mockups so I could see how my designs would actually look on a screen. Overall I think my website is effective because it fits with my brand identity as I stuck to my colour scheme and fonts and used my slogan throughout. I also adapted it to various screen sizes and devices and managed to keep the same basics of the design running throughout these which gives it all strong continuity.
